Tucked away in an unassuming Yokohama house, the Tin Toy Museum Kitahara Collection showcases thousands of whimsical and nostalgic Japanese tin toys dating from the 1890s through the 1960s. Amassed over decades by renowned collector Teruhisa Kitahara, the tightly packed rooms feature everything from wind-up acrobats and chiming monkeys to retro sci-fi figures and miniature trains. Animation buffs will especially love its pop-culture pedigree: an inspiring 1987 visit here directly led Pixar animator John Lasseter to create the Oscar-winning short Tin Toy, which sparked the creation of Toy Story. Visitors can cap off their nostalgic journey by picking up unique tin keepsakes at the cozy on-site shop.
