Founded in 1337 on terrain steeped in dragon lore, Ryūkō-ji Temple stands atop the former Tatsunokuchi Execution Grounds, which operated from the Kamakura through the Muromachi periods. The site witnessed the demise of numerous historical figures, including rebel samurai Hōjō Tokiyuki and foreign envoys, but is most renowned for the legendary 1260 ordeal of Nichiren, whose execution was famously thwarted by a blinding orb of light from across the bay. Today, visitors can explore the tranquil temple complex while reflecting on centuries of dramatic samurai-era history and taking in scenic coastal views.
