According to local lore, a heated rivalry during the historic Kounomachi festival led sixteen rowdy young men to hurl a sacred palanquin into the river. Though originally sentenced to death for their sacrilege, the men were granted clemency and had their traditional chonmage hair buns cut off instead of their heads. Today, the unassuming Chonmage-zuka, or Topknot Mound, stands as a quirky tribute to this merciful brush with fate.
