Perched beneath the roof of Yamagata's historic Senshō-ji Temple, four intricately carved guardian figures bear the weight of the massive structure. Attributed to the master Edo-period sculptor Hidari Jingorō, these lifelike statues spawned captivating local lore claiming they would weep after dark. According to one popular legend, the spirits snuck out each night to engage in bouts of sumo wrestling until temple monks nailed their feet down to halt their nocturnal games. Today, visitors can admire these expressive wooden figures up close and appreciate the blend of artistic mastery and quirky folklore.
