Perched dramatically on the slopes of Mount Kamikura, this ancient shrine is reached by climbing a steep, natural staircase of 538 stone steps cut directly into the hillside. Facing east toward the Pacific Ocean, the mountain summit rewards intrepid visitors with breathtaking sunrise panoramas and a close look at the gigantic sacred boulder, Gotobiki-iwa. Closely linked to the grand Kumano Hayatama Taisha, the sanctuary radiates timeless spiritual power. It also serves as the fiery stage for the legendary Oto Matsuri festival every February 6, when thousands of torch-bearing runners sprint down the treacherous dark steps in a dazzling display.
