The Firefly Squid of Toyama Bay

ほたるいかミュージアム via Google Maps

Every spring between March and June, Toyama Bay transforms into a surreal natural light show as millions of tiny firefly squid rise from the ocean depths to spawn. Equipped with glowing photophores along their bodies and tentacles, these creatures ignite the sea in a shimmering cobalt froth when gathered in fishing nets. Adventurous night owls can board pre-dawn sightseeing boats from Namerikawa to view the ethereal phenomenon up close on the water. Back on shore, visitors can learn more about this marine wonder at the dedicated Hotaruika Museum.
