Conceived in 1989 by local entrepreneur Mutsuo Furukawa, Fureai Sekibutsu no Sato is home to more than 800 remarkably detailed stone figures sculpted in the likenesses of his actual friends, colleagues, Buddhist deities, and zodiac beasts. After years of gentle neglect following its founder's passing, the park was rediscovered and is now maintained by dedicated volunteers. Wandering among the silent, moss-kissed assembly feels profoundly otherworldly, fueling local legends that the uncanny stone crowd stirs to life after dark.
