Established in 1872 during the Meiji Restoration, Yanaka Cemetery is one of the city's most peaceful historical landmarks, feeling more like a tranquil botanical garden than a resting place. Beneath canopies of cherry blossoms and along quiet pathways lie some 7,000 graves of prominent cultural figures, scholars, and politicians. Most notably, visitors can view the gated tomb of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the fifteenth and final shogun of Japan, whose passing marked the definitive end of the feudal era.
