Standing proudly outside Shibamata Station, these life-size bronze statues immortalize Torajirō "Tora-san" Kuruma and his devoted half-sister Sakura from the iconic Japanese film franchise It's Tough to Be a Man. Spanning 50 films across five decades, the series remains a cherished cultural touchstone embodying the nostalgic, down-to-earth spirit of old-school shitamachi downtown Tokyo. Tora-san's statue was erected in 1999 and joined by Sakura in 2017, perfectly recreating the bittersweet moment she sees her wandering brother off on his latest adventure. It is a heartwarming tribute and the perfect starting point for exploring Shibamata’s retro, temple-lined streets.
