Nestled in a children's park in Katsushika Ward, Tateishi-sama is a sacred tuff stone that gave the surrounding neighborhood its name. Thought to have been transported from Mount Nokogiri in Chiba centuries ago, it was once a towering landmark and revered signpost said to trigger disasters if disturbed. Over the generations, ground subsidence and locals chipping off pieces for healing charms and wartime talismans have reduced it to just a few centimeters tall. Despite its humble size, the stone remains honored with offerings of coins and food at its tiny shrine.
