Tucked away in Tokyo's historic Shitamachi district, Tamon-ji is an atmospheric temple dedicated to Vaiśravana and famously known as the 'Tanuki Temple.' Visitors can admire its rare 18th-century thatched-roof gate, which survived the air raids of World War II, alongside poignant war artifacts and memorial statues. According to legend, a founding monk subdued mischievous local yōkai here, later building a dedicated tanuki tomb out of remorse. Today, the peaceful grounds feature playful raccoon dog statues and lush greenery, making it a captivating stop for folklore enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
