Completed in 1883 and designed by British architect Josiah Conder, the Rokumeikan was the dazzling epicenter of Japan’s rapid Westernization during the Meiji era. Foreign dignitaries and the Japanese elite gathered here for extravagant French-style banquets and waltzes aimed at proving Japan's modern standing to the world. Although the opulent building was demolished in 1940, this quiet historical marker in Chiyoda offers history enthusiasts a fleeting glimpse into a transformative, mythicized chapter of the nation's past.
