Established in 1651 at the southern entrance to ancient Edo, the Suzugamori Execution Grounds once stood as a grim warning to travelers and rebellious rōnin, claiming over one hundred thousand lives before closing in 1871. Today, this preserved historical pocket along the old Tokaido highway features eerie surviving relics, including stone foundation blocks used for stakes and crucifixions, alongside a well where severed heads were washed. Thoughtfully maintained with memorial stupas and a neighboring temple, it offers travelers a rare, atmospheric look at the strict realities of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
