Shirahige-Higashi Firewall Apartment Complex

Ohsuke Hayashi via Google Maps

Built in response to Tokyo's history of devastating blazes, this monumental 18-block housing development doubles as an emergency fortress designed to shelter up to 100,000 evacuees. The reinforced concrete facades are equipped with heavy steel shutters that close to seal the gaps between buildings, forming an unbroken barrier against heat and flames. Distinctive red fire cannons line the outer walls, while underground trenches connect the structure to a centralized disaster command center. Exploring the perimeter offers architecture and urban planning enthusiasts a fascinating look at extreme disaster-resilient civil engineering.
