According to an Edo-era legend, this stone Jizo statue was once 'arrested' by police to lure out a fabric thief, ultimately solving the crime. In gratitude, a dedicated pavilion was built, sparking a centuries-old tradition of tying ropes around the guardian figure in hopes of having wishes granted or recovered items found. Once a year on New Year's Eve, the dense layers of rope are cut away during a special ritual, only to begin accumulating anew.
