Hidden in plain sight near Tokyo Station's Keiyo Line concourse, the R.T.O. Relief is an extraordinary piece of post-war history that most commuters rush past without noticing. Crafted in 1947 for the Allied Forces' Railway Transportation Office under General Douglas MacArthur, this sculpted map of Japan was designed by architect Junpei Nakamura to impress visiting personnel. Illustrated with iconic sights like Mount Fuji and labeled in English, the forgotten artwork was rediscovered during station renovations around 2012. Today, it stands behind glass as an intriguing, beautifully preserved window into Japan's mid-century railway heritage.
