Obake Kaidan

Known locally as the Ghost Stairs, Obake Kaidan has long captivated curious wanderers with its perplexing architectural quirk: count 40 steps ascending, but only 39 on your way back down. While spooky neighborhood folklore once attributed the discrepancy to supernatural forces or cursed gravestones, the illusion is actually caused by an unusually flat bottom step that blends into the pavement. Though modern renovations widened the path and added handrails, the staircase retains its mysterious vibe with uneven risers and an abrupt mid-way tapering. It makes for an intriguing, atmospheric detour while exploring the quiet backstreets of traditional Tokyo.
