In the desperate aftermath of World War II, an impoverished community of ragpickers banded together to establish a self-reliant settlement nicknamed the Ant Village. Among them was Satoko "Elisabeth Maria" Kitahara, a young woman of privilege who devoted her brief life to living and working alongside the marginalized scavengers before succumbing to tuberculosis at age 28. Today, the relocated Catholic church in Shiomi serves as the sole remaining monument to their community, crowned by a poignant statue honoring Kitahara, who has since been declared Venerable by the Pope. It is a quiet, deeply reflective stop that illuminates an overlooked chapter of Tokyo's postwar rebuilding and humanitarian spirit.
