Rising 11 meters within the lavish atrium of Japan's most historic department store, the Magokoro Tennyo statue is a monumental feat of traditional craftsmanship and spiritual devotion. Master sculptor Gengen Sato spent a decade carving the 6.8-ton marvel from 500-year-old Kyoto hinoki cypress, capturing a celestial Buddhist maiden descending amidst swirling clouds and a phoenix. The intricate woodwork is embellished with rich clay pigments, gold leaf, platinum, and more than 12,000 inlaid jewels, including jade, agate, and diamonds. Standing proudly at the heart of Nihombashi, this dazzling installation transforms an ordinary shopping excursion into an encounter with museum-grade mid-century Japanese art.
