Standing quietly beside the Zenizuka Jizō-dō pavilion in Tokyo's famous Sensō-ji complex, Kankan Jizō earned its curious name from the metallic 'kan-kan' sound produced when struck with a small stone. Centuries of worshippers seeking wealth scraped away the sacred figure's surface to carry the stone dust in their wallets, leaving the statue worn down beyond recognition. Today, chipping the stone is forbidden, but visitors are still invited to gently tap the statue with a pebble to summon good fortune and transfer away ailments.
