Tucked away in Ikebukuro, Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan is one of the rare surviving Frank Lloyd Wright designs standing in Japan. Completed in 1921 as a progressive Christian girls' school, the U-shaped complex showcases classic Prairie School aesthetics with low-slung proportions, geometric woodwork, and custom furnishings tailored to the scale of young students. Today, visitors can explore the meticulously restored classrooms, marvel at original craftsmanship, and enjoy coffee in the soaring central hall overlooking the manicured lawn. Having miraculously survived the air raids of World War II, it offers design lovers an intimate, unhurried encounter with 20th-century architectural history.
