Jisshi Park offers a serene urban respite complete with shaded benches and a playground, but beneath its peaceful surface lies centuries of somber history. The grounds once held the massive Denma-chō Prison and Execution Ground, where an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people met their fate between 1613 and 1875. Today, observant visitors can find historic remnants scattered through the greenery, including original stone wall foundations and a monument to executed Meiji Restoration intellectual Yoshida Shōin. A preserved Edo-period bronze bell tower also stands on site, a poignant relic whose chimes were once deliberately delayed on execution days to grant the condemned a few extra moments of life.
