Tucked into the landscaped grounds of Osaki Art Village, the Growing Gardener is one of the city's most delightfully surreal pieces of public art. Created in 2006 by the German artist collective Inges Idee, this playful sculpture features an otherwise humble garden gnome sporting a vibrant red Phrygian cap that corkscrews an astounding 15 meters straight into the air. Easily spotted from passing Yamanote Line trains, the towering installation was designed to symbolize the whimsical clash of reality and abstract imagination in modern urban life. It makes for a fun, offbeat photo stop while exploring the contemporary architecture of Shinagawa.
