Serving as the dramatic centerpiece and symbol of Kusatsu, the Yubatake (literally 'hot water field') is one of Japan's most prolific hot spring sources, gushing an astonishing 5,000 liters of thermal water per minute. Rows of traditional wooden conduits cool the steaming, sulfurous waters before channeling them to bathhouses and ryokan across the resort. Strolling along the surrounding stone promenades offers a quintessential onsen atmosphere, especially in the evening when atmospheric illumination lights up the rising mist.
