Completed in 1993, the Shodoshima Great Kannon is an impressive 50-meter-tall white statue dedicated to the Buddhist goddess of mercy. Perched high on a mountainside overlooking the western part of the island, it is visible from miles away and stands as a striking landmark against the lush coastal landscape. Inside the colossal monument lies a serene multi-story temple housing thousands of golden Buddhist images. Visitors can ascend to the top observation rooms to take in panoramic vistas of the surrounding sea and rolling hills.
