Missing Post Office

Z via Google Maps

Created by artist Saya Kubota for the 2013 Setouchi Triennale, the Missing Post Office occupies a weathered former postal building on the tranquil island of Awashima. Thousands of heartfelt, unsendable letters drift inside floating tin post office boxes that sway and chime like ocean waves. Visitors are invited to quietly read the open correspondence, write their own missives to leave behind, or claim a letter if they feel it was destined for them. Managed by the island's former real-life postmaster, it remains one of the most moving and unique cultural stops in the Seto Inland Sea.
