Constructed artificially by locals in 1909, Mount Hiyori has had a tumultuous history in its claim to being Japan's lowest mountain. After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami washed the original peak away, determined residents painstakingly rebuilt the mound out of dirt and gravel to a height of just under ten feet. Today, it stands proudly re-designated on official topographical maps as the nation's lowest elevation peak. It serves as both a whimsical roadside oddity and a touching testament to local community resilience.
