Set dramatically on a small pine-covered islet by the pier, Godaido Hall has stood as a beloved emblem of Matsushima since its original founding in 807. Visitors cross charming wooden bridges with see-through slats offering glimpses of the sea below before reaching the ornate pavilion. Inside rest five sacred Buddhist statues, famously unveiled to the public only once every 33 years. Framed by sweeping vistas of the pine-dotted bay, it is one of the most picturesque and atmospheric viewpoints in the region.
