Accidentally created in 1988 as part of an erosion control dam following the eruption of nearby Mount Tokachi, Shirogane Blue Pond has evolved into one of Hokkaido's most famous natural spectacles. Suspended aluminum hydroxide in the mineral-rich waters scatters sunlight to produce an astonishing, vivid blue hue that shifts with the seasons and lighting. Standing dead larches and silver birches emerge eerily from the glassy surface, creating an otherworldly and poetic landscape. In winter, the frozen pond is illuminated at night, transforming the snowy forest into a glowing fairytale scene.
