Constructed in 1926 to power the bustling coal mines of Yubari, the Shimizusawa Thermal Power Plant once stood as one of the largest privately owned power stations in Japan. Following decades of service and the eventual collapse of the local mining industry, passionate preservationists rescued the remaining historical structures from demolition. Today, the site welcomes visitors through special guided tours and evocative art exhibitions held within its cavernous control rooms and weathered concrete halls.
