Fugoppe Cave Petroglyphs

耕作 via Google Maps

Situated along the scenic coastline of Hokkaido, Fugoppe Cave is one of only two known archaeological sites in Japan featuring ancient petroglyphs. Dating back to the late Epi-Jōmon period around the 5th to 7th centuries, the stone walls are etched with hundreds of mystical symbols, including sea creatures, boats, and mysterious horned and winged figures. Today, the fragile carvings are protected inside a climate-controlled capsule that doubles as an intimate museum. It offers a captivating and unusual glimpse into the shamanistic world of ancient northern Japan.
