According to Japanese folklore and the epic Tale of the Heike, the Nue was a terrifying chimera with the head of a monkey, body of a tanuki, limbs of a tiger, and the venomous tail of a snake. After being slain by a master archer in 1153, the creature's corpse allegedly drifted downriver to Osaka, where locals erected a burial mound to appease its vengeful spirit. Carefully maintained for centuries to ward off bad luck, the tranquil site now functions as a unique shrine dedicated to the mythical beast. Visitors can also spot an informational plaque detailing how the legendary monster was uniquely incorporated into the Port of Osaka's heraldic crest.
