Standing on the grounds of the Church of Perfect Liberty, this 600-foot surreal white spire looks like something plucked straight from science fiction. Constructed in 1970 using an innovative shotcrete technique, its flowing, clay-inspired silhouette houses an inner shrine preserving the names of war casualties from across time on microfilm. While the monumental tower commands awe year-round with its striking architecture, the surrounding grounds also become the epic stage for one of Japan's most colossal fireworks displays each August.
