Founded in 1185, Isshin-ji Temple in Tennoji is celebrated for welcoming all souls regardless of sect or background. When its cemetery filled to capacity in the late 19th century, the temple began an extraordinary funerary custom: blending powdered bone ash with resin and cement to form striking Okotsubutsu, or Bone Buddha statues. Every ten years, a new serene icon is sculpted from hundreds of thousands of departed souls, making the sacred halls an unforgettable place of remembrance and peace. Visitors can also explore ancient pagodas and the historic tomb of Lord Honda Tadatomo, long revered by pilgrims seeking strength in sobriety.
