Built by the Yamato Court in the 7th century to guard against foreign invasion, Kinojo is one of Japan's rarest and most complete examples of an ancient mountain fortress. Hikers can traverse a scenic 2.8-kilometer stone perimeter wall that frames dramatic vistas over the surrounding Okayama plains. The site is famous not only for its reconstructed western gate and ancient defense systems, but also as the legendary mountain stronghold of the demon Ura from the Momotaro folktale.
