Founded in 782 by the monk Shodo Shonin, Futarasan Shrine is the spiritual cornerstone of the region, pre-dating its lavish neighbor Toshogu by centuries. The venerable sanctuary is dedicated to the guardian deities of three sacred peaks: Mount Nantai, Mount Nyoho, and Mount Taro. Visitors can stroll beneath towering cedar trees and admire historical artifacts connected to ancient mountain-worship traditions. It offers a tranquil, deeply atmospheric retreat amidst the forested UNESCO World Heritage grounds.
