Lined with over 12,000 towering cryptomeria trees, the Cedar Avenue of Nikkō traces ancient pilgrimage routes leading to the grand mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Begun in the early 17th century by feudal lord Matsudaira Masatsuna, the tree-planting took more than twenty years and created an awe-inspiring natural cathedral. Today, it holds the rare dual designation of Special Historic Site and Special Natural Monument. Walking or driving along these dappled, cedar-flanked roadways offers an unforgettable journey back to the age of samurai.
