Sado Island Tarai Bune

高津敏信 via Google Maps

Originating in the Meiji period, tarai bune are barrel-shaped wooden tub boats designed to navigate the island's rocky coves and rough waters with surprising stability. Originally used by locals to harvest abalone, turban shells, and seaweed, these whimsical vessels are now an iconic cultural experience at Ogi Port. Visitors can climb aboard for a leisurely harbor ride guided by experienced local rowers, or even try their own hand at sculling the tricky single oar.
