Chokokuji Temple's Rabbit Kannon Statue

A H via Google Maps

Founded in the 9th century by Kobo Daishi, Chokokuji Temple has long been admired for its lush peony gardens and historic heritage on remote Sado Island. In 2018, the temple gained international intrigue by erecting a dramatic 20-foot-tall 'Rabbit Kannon' dedicated to the friendly resident rabbits that maintain the temple grounds. The towering white bunny features a relief of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, sculpted onto its torso. Visit after twilight to catch an eerie, unforgettable spectacle when the colossal bunny's eyes glow a piercing, vibrant red.
