Tucked within the historic Tōdai-ji temple complex, the Nekodan, or "Cat Stairway," is a quiet flight of stone steps steeped in quirky local folklore. According to ancient superstition, anyone unfortunate enough to stumble on these steps is destined to be reborn as a feline in their next life. Nara has long been connected to Japanese cat mythology—including early tales of supernatural nekomata—lending an enchanting aura to this hidden pathway. Reaching the top also brings you close to Karakuni-jinja, a small shrine dedicated to ancient builders and protective tengu spirits.
