Perched atop a hill in southern Okinawa, the Tomori Stone Lion is celebrated as the island's oldest and largest village shisa. Sculpted in 1689 following a feng shui master's advice to protect the area from devastating fires, this legendary beast inspired the iconic guardian lion statues found across the Ryukyu Islands today. The weathered limestone figure also remarkably survived fierce combat during the Battle of Okinawa, and bullet scars from the 1945 fighting remain etched across its body. Today, it stands as a poignant and resilient monument blending ancient Ryukyuan folklore with modern history.
