Tatami-ishi (Tatami Rocks)

Hi de via Google Maps

Located on the southern coast of Ou Island near Kumejima, Tatami-ishi is a nationally designated Natural Monument celebrated for its remarkable columnar jointing. Formed eons ago as andesite magma cooled into distinctive pentagonal and hexagonal pillars, the rocks have been flattened by relentless sea erosion to resemble the woven grid of traditional Japanese tatami mats. At low tide, visitors can stroll across this ancient geometric pavement while enjoying sweeping coastal views of the surrounding turquoise waters. It remains one of Okinawa's most visually striking and accessible geological wonders.
