Dating back to 1527, Sogen-ji was once a premier Buddhist sanctuary housing the sacred mausoleum of the Ryukyu Kingdom’s kings. Though the vast temple complex was leveled during World War II, its atmospheric triple-arched stone gate miraculously endured and was meticulously restored. Today, stepping beyond this ancient entryway reveals a quiet urban park anchored by a magnificent 30-foot gajumaru banyan tree.
