Following the devastating 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen, several homes swallowed by volcanic mudflows were preserved in situ to memorialize the disaster. Visitors can walk among eleven partially submerged structures—both outdoors and sheltered inside a protective pavilion—buried an average of nine feet deep in earth and ash. Standing beside rooflines that emerge eerily from the ground offers an unforgettable, sobering testament to the immense power of nature and the resilience of the surrounding community.
