Originally founded in 1628 and rebuilt in 1976 following its destruction in the 1945 atomic bombing, Fukusai-ji Temple boasts one of the most striking architectural designs in Japan. A towering 60-foot aluminum statue of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, stands atop a main hall sculpted like a giant tortoise. Inside, the temple serves as a tranquil memorial and resting place for more than 16,000 casualties of World War II. Suspended from the hollow interior of the massive Bodhisattva is one of the world's largest Foucault pendulums, quietly swinging over the subterranean vault in perpetual motion.
