Designed by American organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church resembles an ancient ruin harmoniously fused with its woodland setting. Built in 1988 to honor the philosophy of Nonchurch Movement founder Uchimura Kanzō, the structure weaves natural stone and glass together to evoke the union of nature, light, and spirit. Inside, sunlight filters gently through curved arches onto mossy surfaces and running water, creating a breathtakingly serene atmosphere. Today, this unique secular sanctuary serves as an evocative memorial hall and one of Japan's most captivating architectural marvels.
