Tatsuoka Castle is one of only two European-style star forts ever built in Japan, completed in 1867 by Count Matsudaira Noritaka. Modeled after classic Vauban fortifications, its distinctive five-pointed layout blends Western military geometry with late-Edo period Japanese ambition. Although most of the original complex was dismantled shortly after the Meiji Restoration, the surrounding moats and surviving kitchen storehouse still evoke its brief, fascinating history. Exploring this peaceful monument offers a captivating glimpse into a transitional era when samurai heritage met modern foreign architecture.
