Tatsuoka Castle is one of only two European-style star forts ever built in Japan, completed in 1867 by Count Matsudaira Noritaka. Although most of the original complex was dismantled shortly after the Meiji Restoration, the surrounding moats and surviving kitchen storehouse still evoke its brief, fascinating history.
