Perched on a scenic hill overlooking the Kitakami River, Takadachi Gikeido honors one of Japan's most celebrated and tragic historical figures, Minamoto no Yoshitsune. In 1189, the famed warrior met his untimely end at this site after being betrayed on the orders of his own brother, the shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo. Today, visitors can view a detailed, life-size wooden statue of Yoshitsune enshrined within the quiet memorial hall. Beyond its compelling history, the hillside grounds offer breathtaking panoramic views that famously moved the haiku master Matsuo Basho.
