Founded in 850 by the monk Ennin, Mōtsū-ji flourished under the Northern Fujiwara clan before fire and war destroyed its original grand halls. What miraculously survived is its tranquil Pure Land garden, crafted according to the world's oldest garden design treatise, the Sakuteiki. Centered on the sprawling Oizumi ga Ike pond, the landscape incorporates rocky shorelines, small islands, and surrounding mountains through borrowed scenery. A stroll along its peaceful paths offers visitors an ethereal glimpse into an unbroken tradition of Buddhist contemplation and timeless aesthetic harmony.
