Flowing quietly behind Jōken-ji Temple in the folklore-rich town of Tōno, Kappabuchi Pool is said to be the home of mischievous water goblins known as kappa. Shaded by dense foliage, the tranquil and slightly eerie waterway features a small riverside shrine dedicated to kappa and Chichigami, a deity associated with nursing and motherhood. Adventurous travelers can even pick up a whimsical 'kappa fishing license' in town and dangle a cucumber-baited line into the cool waters.
